all their normal icons have changed, and when i click on them it just does nothing, i think i had a virus that i let progress too far, is there any way to fix it so my programs bring up the proper windows when clicked on? the only program that works right now is firefox for some reason, every single other file seems to not have the information to work?

please help me!

first, right click and check the properties of the icons and let us know if they are valid.

ok heres an example: my steam counterstrike laucher
properties:
type of file: inkfile
description:steam
location:C:\Documents and Settings\kyles account\Desktop
attributes: read only: no hidden: no
shortcut:
target type: exefile
target location:Steam
target:"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe"
start in:"C:\Program Files\Steam"
shortcut key: none
run: normal window

when i try and select an icon it doesnt work, and when i press "find target" it does nothing. when i click on any program icons they just dont open at all. ps i have windows xp if that helps.

comment: launch norton antivirus 2005

if that helps that'd be great.

run your virus scanner, SpyBot, AdAware and clean any items found.

once you do that disable the System Restore and reboot.

after you reboot place your XP CD in the drive and reboot, when the XP CD kicks up do a repair.

i cant run virus scans, i said my programs dont work.
but I'll try and get an xp disc to repair.

where can i disable system restore?

Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, and select System Restore tab. OR via the System applet on the Control Panel.

while you are doing a System Restore disconnect from the internet and do all work offline, including your virus scans.

when i right clicked on my computer even after several times, it did nothing. and i cant open my control panel, when i try it asks me if i want a shortcut made, and if i press yes, it makes another faceless icon on the desktop titled shortcut to control panel, when i click on it, it does absolutely nothing.

go to your start bar and see if you can get to the control panel that way.

if not, can you get the Run command to come up?

the start bar thing doesnt work, but the run command does come up suprisingly.

have you tried to boot using your XP CD? if you can do this use the Repair option.

if you can't normally shut down XP then insert the XP CD and turn off the PC. then after about 20 seconds power the PC back up and see if it will boot from the CD or automatically bring up the autorun on the CD.

if none of that works then once you are back to the point where you can get the Run command line up type in rstrui in the RUN command and have your CD available.

let me know what happens when you go through each of these steps. hopefully the boot up process will work.

good luck

btw i cant get the xp disk for a couple days.
