Yes the computer shut down prematurly and on boot up scandisk stops at 27% and the grey box (DOS) states
"Scandisk detected an invalid long filename entry on this drive but was unable to fix it,
To fix this problem run scandisk for windows."
The OK tab will not work. The keyboard does not respond. How do I fix. I have ,today ,purchased a new system yet would really like to retrieve my back up drive.

Why do you need to run scandisk? You can add the old drive to the new machine as a slave, pull your files across.

Carlsberg don't run I.T. departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

Yes thank you Grenage, I do know that and will do. I really wanted info on my main drive as well if it were at all possible. I appreciate the help. Great day!

Aye, my thoughts were that you probably replaced the machine after having problems with an old one, and that the hard drive has corruption and might be damaged. You really want to run as little as possible on it, until you get your data off. A scandisk often does more harm than good.

The long filename error happens on every one I see. That is not a problem with your system. The not being able to continue past it is the error.
Rather than replacing the hard drive, have you considered a reinstall of the OS? An overlay install should resolve the issue. I've generally found it easier to figure out what I really need from a running machine.

Yes I did, consider reinstalling the os Edfair,however, the system will not boot to safe mode via "Microsoft Windows 98 start up menu". It will go to the CMOS and the keyboard works, but will not go to safe mode hitting the f8 key or simutainiusly holding the ctrl key.I may try changing the drive in CMOS and insert 98 disk. Any ideas about that? Thanks again... all!

Did you make the EBD when you installed? Or have any workable boot disk? Assuming you have a floppy available you could get one from that works.

I copy the root and w98 subdirectory off the CD to an install directory on the hard drive and install from there. Cleaner and faster. Just force it to put the OS in the same location as the original. Mine are easier because I have dual boot with DOS so I can do it all from the hard drive but from floppy works as well.

I also put the boot menu up at start with a short timeout but suspect you can't get to command prompt to do the same since there seems to be a keyboard issue with the OS.

I haven't used 98 for a while, but if memory serves me correct, isn't there an option to NOT run scandisk when windows attempts to start? Then run scandisk for windows? Again, it's been a while so I could be very wrong about that.

It usually runs ONLY if there was an abnormal shutdown.

Thanks! Changing the drive did'nt work. Im just gonna rip it out and move on. Thanks to all!

That sounds defeatist. How about running some diagnostics first and see if you really have a problem on the hard drive. That will be good info to have if and when you move the drive.

If you boot to DOS (Command Prompt), you can edit the file msdos.sys (located in C:\).
Edit the following line:

Autoscan = 1

to
Autoscan = 0

This will bypass running scandisk and boot into windows.
