Uncheck "use precise cursors" under the general preferences (edit - preferences - general).

Well thanks for two good answers: Both correct. By having "use precise cursors" checked the x became the default and the Cap Lock changed it. So putting Cap lock "on" fixed it. But then when I unchecked it Cap Lock off did the trick.
But you know all this already. Anyway thanks for helping with an annoying problem.
