Hi all,

I've a problem with my pc, when I turn on it, after the starting processes, happen that it going in block, it means that I cannot do anything else, and if I'm watching some videos the immage is blocked and the sound is repeated.
The strange thing is that if I try several times it remains stable without have any other problems (I can leave it on for days without problem).
Do you have some idea about what could be the cause of my problem?
Thanks
P

I'm assuming that when you say "block", you actually mean "black"?

Sounds like a display adapter going bad or I think more likely a monitor going bad. Either that, or your power settings are set in a funky manner or something.

Is this happening whether or not you are actually doing anything on your computer (for instance, are you moving your mouse around clicking on stuff, and this still happening?

Thanks for your reply!

Sometimes happen that it going "black" (no image on video and monitor going in stand by, but pc is still running), but usually it seems to be "freezed".

Cold be my power setted in a funky manner...how I can verify it?
I already tried to change the videoboard but with the same result.

Thx in advance
P

You said that sometimes your system is "freezing", as in you can actually see everything on the monitor, but just cannot do something? If that's the case, it could be many other things - overheating, possibly a program that has a bad bug, some form of malware..

How to check power settings (Windows XP - other versions similar):
[ol]
[li]Right-click on desktop, choose "Properties"[/li]
[li]Left-click on "Sreen Saver" tab[/li]
[li]Left-click on "Power" button[/li]
[li]On "Power Schemes" tab, check the "Turn off monitor" setting to see if for some reason it is set too low.[/li]
[li]On "Hibernate" tab, try unchecking "Enable hibernation" if that is checked - sometimes this causes issues.[/li]
[li]If you made any changes in any section, left-click "ok"[/li]
[li]If you pressed "ok" on the last button, left-click on "ok" button again.[/li]
[/ol]

Pieretto - please state your PC specifications, it would help narrow down the problem...

my bet would be on either the PSU, probably old and underpowered, or you may be heading towards an HDD meltdown (harddrive dying) - check the connectors on the drive, reseat them (IDE cable and molex power plug)...

Thank u everyone!
I already changed the PSU with another one more silently last month.
I'm unsure about the motherboard compatibility with the different DIMMs i've mounted, i have 2 DIMM2 banks a and 1 DIMM3. What do you think about?

The following is based on XPH,SP2:
I have one that does similar things. It will eventually bring up the task manager [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL] with a second display hiding under the first (the viewable is at a lower contrast). Shutting down the viewable task manager brings up the underlying one and shutting that one down frees up everything. I don't know if there are 2 versions running or if this is a display only.

I suspect that one of the background tasks has failed to return the system to the previous state. But since the display has an issue it may well be a video problem. I have run into this previously with a display, but it was with DOS and probably 10 years ago.

In my case it is intermittent enough that the solution would take more time than the putting up with the problem.

and I had a similar problem just last week, while watching online videos, it stopped and froze the video, got stuttering mouse movement, then total freeze up...

rebooted and it did not find the HDD...

opened the case and noticed the power connector had loosed itself (Molex to SATA converter, two of the pins where not correctly inserted)...

that is why I also mentioned the HDD as possible fault...

but since PIERETTO is not listing specs (probably just did not read it or the GOOGLE translator just did not translate it correctly) and just throwing in 'thoughts that come to mind', your guess is just as good as anyones at this stage...

I had the same problem and it liked to have drive me crazy trying to fix. I found the problem. It was the video card with the ATI chip. I even had the company send me a replacement card and it did the same thing. About every 10th boot it would go to a black screen. I just bought a Nvidia chip video card and the problem went away. By the way, it would only do this when connected to the DVI connector on the video card. I never had problem as long as it was connected analog.

Sorry if I did not answer quickly...but my GOOGLE translator just did not translate it correctly :)))

I checked the HDD connector...I did not see anything strange, it was correctly mounted...anyway i never read any messages about HDD fault...

My video card is an Nvidia geforce 440 MX, I rebooted my pc with another video card nvidia geforce FX 5200 , but the result was the same...could be my monitor the cause? It is a samsung syncmaster 19poll.

As I previously suggested, I'd try another monitor just to see.

However, if your system really has been freezing up before going black, I seriously doubt that it is the monitor.

There is also one other sort of strange thing that I've heard of happening for others. Sometimes a surge protector can go bad and cause weird problems with computers. I think it's extremely rare to be the case, but I have known of at least 2 or 3 instances in the past 3 or 4 years.

Are you connecting your monitor with the analog or DVI? My monitor is also the samsung. I have read where that could be the problem. Do not ask me why but I know it never would do it on another monitor. I finally sold the system to a person and he has had no problems with it. I first removed the ATI video card and suggested another brand monitor for him. The system I am using now has never did this. Different motherboard,CPU, ram ,hd,PS so I really think it could have been the samsung monitor. Let us know
