Ok guys I have a new RUNNING mobo, I started it up and in the setup I just chose the "fail-safe settings" option

For some reason or another, it will not boot up into XP home like I have...Im just kinda in the dark on this part maybe someone can throw out something to help me?? Thanks in advance fellas!!!!

Exactly what is it doing when trying to load? Need more information here, is it just freezing? Is it doing an endless reboot? What exactly is it doing?

Well first off...when I set the DRAM timing to auto it says that it is the wrong timing, I would set it manually but I have no clue what settings it needs to be at.

So when I DONT go into setup it says that Windows didnt start sucessfully and it gives me the safe mode options and so on...then my keyboard wont work for me to choose the right options so it counts down then trys to start Windows, fails and starts it all over again....

Thanks again for the help.

Well as for ram settings you can get them from the manufacturer of your ram. Email them and tell them the model number and they will send you the tech specs. Also your computer should be loading with the ram set to auto so I would see if there is a newer bios version available from the makers and if so flash it to the newest version. Also make a ram tester from this site below. Follow the instructions to make and test it and test only one chip of ram at a time. Otherwords when you test it have only one chip on the board.

well im on my laptop right now...how do I go about flashing it to the newest version?

So when I test a stick of RAM do I stick it in my laptop and test it? Sorry Im such a newbie...Thanks again

My keyboard gets disabled after I exit the setup screen, how can I get this to stop?

No and its ok lol. Thats what this forum is here and now that I know your new to this I will explain in further detail. Also if you are still unclear on something feel free to ask. Ok when testing the ram you still test it in the motherboard not on the laptop. The way you test it is make the disc from your laptop as the site says. Make either a floppy disc or cdrom. Then have only one stick of ram in the desktop computer, put the disc in and be sure the computer is set to boot from that disc. It will start testing the memory. after it finishes one test it will say if it had any errors or not. If you get errors you might have bad ram but wait before replacing it till after you get the specs of the ram from the ram company. Then test it again and if you still get errors then that chip of ram is bad. Do that for both.

Now as for flashing your bios. First off you will need a floppy disc for doing this. Go to the motherboards site, find the newest version of the bios and if its newer than the version you have download it, extract it and follow the instructions included with it. It will tell you how you go about flashing the bios. If you have any other questions or problems feel free to ask. Hope this helps.

Well crap, I dont have a floppy drive in either of my computers haha dangit...

Well I made a memtest cd and tried to boot from the cdrom and it tried to boot up Windows then just did what it was doing before, restarting itself then trying to boot the restarting itself and so on and so forth.

I guess i'll go to Microcenter and pick up a external floppy drive for my laptop and a floppy drive for my big rig....

I did that, Im burning another CD with the memtest on it. Other than that why else would it just keep booting like that? Then my keyboard wont work at the safe mode screen, the screen that says that Windows didnt boot properly and asks how I wanna boot(safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc, etc, etc....)

Okay so I just tried again to boot from my cdrom with the memtest in there and it says:

Verifying DMI Pool Data.............
Boot from CD:
Boot from CD:
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

but see I cant press enter because at this point my keyboard wont work...

Ok then, I'll be sure to do that tomorrow ASAP. So after I flash the BIOS it should boot up right? Im thinking maybe something is up with my HDD but my friends HDD that we were working on did the same exact thing. Is my OS installed on my HDD or my Mobo...This is my first Mobo install...I usually just help my friends and family replace other stuff (VGA, HDD, etc etc) in short, Im a newbie haha

Thanks again, electronicsfreak

lol its ok you will learn. All of us have went through something or another at one point. Its how you learn. Im hoping after you flash the bios it works but it still might not. Its a step by step process repairing things. Just how it goes.

Well I'll get those floppy drives and flash the bios and let you know how it goes, thanks again, you've been alot of help.

As for picking up a floppy drive for your computer good idea although you dont need to pick up an external one for laptop unless you just want one. Just borrow a computer that has one and make the floppy disc. and your welcome.

Well this laptop is going to my roommate for Christmas and he has all his papers and school stuff on floppys so I guess he is going to need it anyways, he better be getting me something good for christmas!

Hey dodge8604,

You said you have a new motherboard - did you get a new CPU with this too? And are you still using the old hard disk that you had attached to the original motherboard?

I'm just wondering if you will need to reinstall Windows as the new board may need different drivers. Other than that - I had a problem with similar symptoms where my computer just got to the windows loading screen and kept rebooting - to fix this I had to boot up from my windows CD, go into the recovery console and run a
Code:
chkdisk /r

Just a couple of suggestions. Good luck.

Are you trying to boot up into an previously installed Windows?
When swapping a major component like a motherboard it is always advisable to clean install your operating system. This is because the previous installation was configured for the "old" setup, drivers may conflict and caurse errors/freezing/blue screen etc
You may get away with a repair install if you don't want to loose data but back up first if you cannot aford to loose data.

Well this rig was built for me then sent to me over a year ago and I dont think there was a windows cd with it, I think the microsoft website has a download to burn to a cd. Thing is, it will not boot from a cdrom, it wont boot to anything, just goes thru the boot over and over...

How do I do a clean install of my OS? I do have alot of data on my HDD that I dont want to lose. How do I back up my hard drive when I cant get my computer running? Use someone elses computer? Sorry again that Im such a newbie, gotta start somewhere though. Thanks again!
