My Maxtor 5000dv has locked up

Hi my external fire wire has locked up, the plates are not moving...maxtor has determined it is a hardware problem , ans is willing to send out a new one, but i need to recover my data a data recovery company has quoted me an astronomical amount...any idea on how i can do this my self...don't really care about the drive it self, just my data!!!! thanks a million, piotr.

Its a standard IDE drive in that box .
Maybe its the 12v electronics thats bad.
I really dont think it's the drive itself.
Crack it open and take out the ATA drive and connect it
internally in your computer as a slave on one of the ide channels.

thanks for your advice, yeach thats what i thought, but the light comes on, the drive itself does not move , no spinning...just beeping...
