Hi..all
I'm using dial-up so when i type on cmd the command ipconfig..
This is what I get..:

Windows IP Configuration

PPP adapter Verizon:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 64.32.99.13
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 64.32.99.13
can u look that my dhcp server assigned me the same ip address of the default-gateway... Why..? anybody can explain me?

It's quite normal to have your default gateway the same as your dynamically assigned IP address for most Windows DUN (dial up networking) connections.

Are you saying you cannot connect to remote sites or are you simply enquiring why they are the same?

Yes...I want to know Why..There's no problem Everything is working perfectly..But That i want to know is why my ISP is assigning me the same ip address of the DG..that's what i want to know lol..

Because they can? There's nothing that says you can't be your own default gateway. :)

Don't worry, the same thing is happening to the rest of their customers, and it still works.

If they assign customers a gateway of one of their routers then thay have to worry about how many get assigned and to what router. This way with you as the gateway they simply route your traffic the best means possible. Also if a router went down then all of those assigned with that gateway would be without service until they were assigned a new gateway.

Default Gateway Configuration

You can configure a default gateway on a computer running Microsoft® Windows® XP or Windows Server™ 2003 in the following ways:

• When obtaining an IP address configuration using DHCP, the default gateway becomes the value of the first IP address in the Router DHCP option, which is configured on the DHCP server to specify an ordered list of one or more default gateways.

• When obtaining an IP address configuration using the user-configured alternate configuration, the default gateway is the IP address specified in the Default gateway field on the Alternate Configuration tab for the properties of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component in Network Connections. You can specify only a single default gateway.

• When manually specifying an IP address configuration, the default gateway is the IP address typed in the Default gateway field on the General tab for the properties of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). To specify multiple default gateways, you must add them from the IP Settings tab in the advanced properties of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

metafox,

the isp DOES NOT assign the gateway address(you would see this is you enabled ppp logging and looked at the negotiation). in your case, that's simply windows filling in the field with something that it knows. don't worry about it, it's a serial link anyway (packets either go in or out - there aren't any other hosts on there other than you or the isp modem).

hope that helps.
