my computer just decided on a start-up tonight to not recognize either of my cd drives. I have tried uninstalling and letting windows do a found new hardware to no avail. It says can't load driver. The system can see the drivers and the devices but can't load to operate. I have restarted so many times I don't know what else to do. Help
Thanks

First off, The BIOS at the start up has to detect the drives. If their not detected here then WINXP won't detect them. So Reboot :) enter the setup and check the IDE detection. If not detected check the IDE lead is firmly attached and the jumper setting are correct.

Hope this helps

Have you done anything to the jumpers or to the cable wires??

Whatever you do, be nice to to people who helps you or try their best to make things better for you.

do a google search for disappearing cd drives. You'll find some good info for some motherboards and IDE controllers.
Not neccessarily for your problem.
Do you have the drivers for your motherboard?

The same thing happened to me last week, I am about to reformat my hard drive because of it. Mine started when I tried to install a free firewall (first mistake) and then my dsl booted me, after I rebooted I could see the harddrives in the bios, but the device manager shows error code 19? If no one has an answer to the disappearing cd rom drives, do you know how to reformat windows 2000 pro?
