Normally I only use this site for strictly business questions, but I've been having this issue for a while and decided I should ask someone (maybe?)

I have a GF4 FX5600 on a K7S5A-PRO w/ XP 2400. I only have 384 Megs of Ram (Pc 133) which I'm in the process of changing (i have slots for both types of Ram)

Are there any known conflicts between GF 5600 and This ECS Mother board? I was thinking that maybe I didn't have enough power for everything when running full throttle but I have a 350 or 400 watt power supply.

That and the computer will restart in the middle of running windows randomly. Mostly it will restart after "Direct X fails to make a draw" or there's some issue with C++ within a graphics program.

I can't figure out why this is happening, I've been told it could be from a lack of Ram - which I am in the middle of fixing, I'm putting in PC2100 2 chips of 512 each. I figure the FSB on the Motherboard is 266, the ram speed should make for a good ration. Is this a correct assumption?

I'm not really a hardware person, I read the manuals and Tom's Hardware guide. I'm actually a software person, so a little help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you in Advance.

Does this problem occur at the same spot in the dxdiag? Do you also have error logging enabled so you can see what error code you are recieving? (Start-Control Panel-System-Advanced tab-under system failure - Write an event to the system log and also turn off Automatically Restart)

I know the FX runs hot, and depending on what CPU your running, it could be a few things causing it. After my own personal issues with XP, Nvidia and my Athlon I found out it was a heating issue but had almost replaced all my components trackign down the Error codes.

Well, though this wasn't super helpful, if you can provide a bit more information: CPU and After(if it's not done already) you get some error messages to work with.

No, I don't know anything about this type of things.. hehe.. I'll try this when I get home, Thankyou VERY much for your help. I'll enable it and look at the log. It could be a heat issue - but I don't think so.

I'll post further about this once I enable the log - small question - how do I view the log once it's enabled??

Thx again!

To view the log, you use the Event Viewer under the system tools.

Start -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Event Viewer -> then check the System log.

You should see the log of the error, and by stepping through the events right before it you should be able to get a Error code.

p.s. How does one edit a reply? Since I obviously did it wrong *laugh*

This is the message I found in the log;

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0xf7236b0a, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xf7236b0a). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini080903-01.dmp.

This is after the computer has restarted from a "restart"

In the application log this happens:

Faulting application swgclient_r.exe, version 0.56.199.0, faulting module swgclient_r.exe, version 0.56.199.0, fault address 0x004e7a79.

yeah - star wars galaxies. These are two different times and issues. Sometimes when I run this game it will restart my computer as I'm entering the "play" part of teh game, and sometimes it crashes after 5minutes - a few hours and creates the second log. It doesn't restart the computer automatically at that point - rather after about 5 mintues the computer will restart

I don't know - I'm using this game as an example since it's where I see the crash the most. But if I leave my computer on for a few days I'll come home and it'll have restarted at some point during the day.

Thank you for your help!

It could potentialy be a virus that's causing the restarts, or it could be heat, or it could be direct x, or video drivers. I would place money on it being heat (FX's are not exactly cool runners) or direct x. maybe on a long shot it could be a virus. do it simply first, check for viruses, make sure you've got the latest video drivers, direct x, and if all else fails, try another video card. of course it may be your ram, see if swaping them out helps. Pc133, my word that's pushing it on an athlon ehehe. Hope that helps some.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to sit there with a dumb look on your face.
I have fun. Usualy at my own expense, but I have fun regardless

Sorry for not replying in a while, kinda got caught up at work and didn't have much free time to read responses.

As for the 0xd1 error, and your symptoms. First and always when weird occurences you should scan for virus's, then double check drivers, etc. The way yours is acting seems familiar to my MSI GeForce4 MX 440 8xAGP when playing Splinter Cell. After digging through the dumpfiles I finally started to monitor temperatures and found that to be the culprit. Your board should have a CPU Temp monitor program, install that and have it running while playing SWG and see what it tells you. Typically it'll shut the computer (Gracefully with a message about doign so) when the computer gets to hot.

Guess what - it was a heat issue the entire time.

I installed SpeedFan, watched the heat and when the computer was restarting... it was 100% heat related.

today I put an additional fan in, and it worked like a charm.

Thank you very much!

Just because you have an answer - doesn't mean it's the best answer.

I'm glad to hear you have bottomed your fault but have to say that we have experienced several K7S5A based systems that have had serious issues running stabley with FX or newer, Nvidia cards.

Once a slightly older GF4 was installed the problems have gone away in all cases.

FX range are Geforce 5's and in our experiences a little new to run properly on the aging SIS 735 chipset.

I hope you don't have any re-occurances of problems with yours.
