I recently bought a new laptop (HP dv2620). When I hibernate the computer, it will later turn back on out of hibernation for no apparent reason. I first noticed this one night when I awakened to find the power light on. I figured that maybe I had just closed the lid and the computer was in sleep mode. However, in the morning I found the battery dead and realized it was on all night. I already tried looking at the power settings and maintenance schedules but came up with nothing. Is this a Vista glitch? What could be causing the computer to suddenly turn back on?

I see this all the time on my wife's machine. You probably have Windows update on to auto update the laptop. A little weird, but even in hibernation mode it wakes up to update, then restarts when it needs to. No rhyme or reason, just updating the pc. You may want to tell it to download the updates, but not install til you tell it to.

Or turn it completely off, and do the updates then manually...

Also check the BIOS settings for 'wake on' events. Often found under 'advanced'. Disable 'Wake on LAN' and any others you don't need/want.

Hear, hear. That way you always know what was installed in case something goes wrong.

For the novice user, I'm not a big fan of turning off Automatic Updates. 99.8% of MS updates don't hurt anything, so, it's not worth fiddling over for the average user.

Agreed - BIOS setting to turn off or change "wake on LAN events" can put a stop to the waking up.

In Device Manager, go to the properties of you Netowrk cards (even if you don't use them). Make sure "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" is not checked

You know when you do the update and download.

Is there a way to turn off that RESTART COMPUTER NOW OR LATER dialog box that keeps popping up every 5 minutes? That is so annoying. Yeh I know I choose to update the computer, but I don't need a constant reminder, I'll do it when I'm ready.
