Hi.
Its not in my bios, because i have a 4.3 gig aswell. But, after trying to delete all partitions in (fdisk)-when only reading 500mb, I try to make a new partition, hoping that it would recognise all 1.2 gig. but it still only patitions/formats to 500mb.
Is this a problem with harware settings(i havent changed any and it used to be full 1.2gig) or, is it a simple software setting.
Is there a programme to run diagnostic on the drive, with the power to attain the full 1.2gig.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Andrew
(i couldnt find info info out on the web, been looking for weeks)

It's most likely the version of fdisk you're using.
If it's DOS 6.x, then you only get 540 meg.
Use a startup disk from windows9x and say YES to enable large disk support. Cheers,
Jim

What hardware settings? Auto detect available? Do you have detection as a bios choice? If so , what did you choose? Ed Fair

Auto detect is on, ever since i sucessfully flashed the bios.
And, i was using the drive before i flashed. and it used to be 1.2gig - then..i cant honestly remember what i played with in fdisk..but, i think, when i created a partition, or formatted, it only gave me the option to format up to 500mb.

So - have i created a small dos partiton?...i dont think so, because i should be able to retreive it with the same fdisk that i created it with in the first place..
Still with me?

anyway, im lost...
Thanks for ALL being so help full, maybei can solve this with your help.

There is a bios autodetect that is used to identify drives on bootup, there may also be another that is a blanket detection that will force the correct specs. Called IDE hard drive detection on the main screen if you have it. Will go thru the HD chain and list all possible choices for each drive.
You might also force LBA on the drive in question.
And to verify that everything on the drive is viable, you might try creating an extended partition to see if the rest of the drive assigns correctly.
I suspect that LBA might help you out. Ed Fair

Since i got my new(v4.15pg) BIOs auto detect is in the settings. But no IDE hard drive detection option.
Forcing LBA seems to shrink the capacity...
and no extendasble partions - can i get a more recent version of fdisk? - to use these more comprehensive setting you talk of.
BUT...
Ive just compressed the 1.2gig- and now have a new drive(f) that is 1gig ish, with the host - down to about 300k
Is this the only way to get the full space out of the drive?
How can i totally reset the drive, to start all that partitioning etc....again.
Once again, thank you for your help peeps :) much appreciated.

p.sp. - HARD DRIVE SPEC (entered in cmos - these make no difference)
1482cyl
1275mb
16hd
63sect

The ide autodetect I mentioned above is when you select individual ide channels for auto detect. This is superceded by the IDE hard drive detection from the master setup page.
When you use IDE detection it should allow you to choose the 3 ways the drive can be used, normal , large, or LBA.
Only way to restart is to use fdisk and remove everything.
Would suggest that you see if there is another machine you could put the dirve in. You should be able to get to at least 2.1 with anything from 6.x up. Ed Fair

Hi again.
After a proper snoop on fixing hard drives, i found the debug code.
Entered it in DOS, partitioned and formatted.(all 1.2 gig:)
Now all is well.
Thanks for your encouragment.
Andrew
....just one last thing ;o) - If a drive has bad sectors , will a debug get rid of them, will anything?

hola Hi
i dont speak english

Andrew.
:)
