MX440 under XP: blank screen at reboot

I have a K7S5A mobo, with a AGP GEforce 4 MX440. When I install the drivers under Windows XP it all installs and runs fine. But the next time I reboot the screen goes blank just after the XP startup screen and it never comes up. If I reset and select "Last Known Good Config" everything is restored OK but with just VGA drivers.

I have tried getting the latest (both official and beta) drivers from NVidia. I have upgraded the motherboard BIOS and have even upgraded the AGP driver from SiS -- always with the same result. I also tried dropping the clock back from 133/133 to 100/100.

The machine is an K7S5A with Athlon 1600 and 512 MB SDRAM. This is a dual Win98 machine -- the drivers installed and ran fine under Windows 98 (with all BIOS versions and clock speeds).

I can't think of what else to try. Please help.

I have the exact same problem with the same video card. I noticed sometimes on startup that my NIC card and the video card were sharing the same IRQ. I manually set the IRQ numbers instead of setting it to auto. I didn't have a problem after many reboots, but occasionally I still get the blank screen. I hope someone can help me out as well...

Hi there, I had the same problem with GForce 2, Elite K7s5a motherboard and Athlon 1900+, until I got the latest Nvidia drivers, (as of last week 29.2) from
Not sure why, but all fine now.

Under XP the video card is sharing IRQ 5 with a large number of devices, but XP did not seem to let me change the IRQ used. (Under Windows 98 where the card works fine, IRQ 5 is also used for the video card and shared with ACPI and network card only.)

A I said before I have tried the latest official driver from the NVidia web site and also their latest beta driver. I have also tried the latest official driver downloaded from Microsoft.

I tried the 9.20 drivers last week but had a peek at from your post. I downloaded the 9.40 drivers and they worked!

Sorry for ever doubting you, and thanks.

Thanks:), no probs

No probs, still has not sorted out my refresh rate prob, always seems to pick a sl lower refresh rate than the hardware is capable of, you can manually change it, but when applications (games etc) change they pick a lower refresh rate:(.......I'll have to try the 29.2 ones.

Good luck

Joe

Thanks:)

Did you just upgrade the driver, or ADD/REMOVE or even use detonator destroyer?
