My PC won't start with the power button. I have to unplug the power cord, wait for a couple of seconds (mandatory) and then plug it back in. That's the only way it will start.

It's a 4-year-old K6-II PC.

Input or similar experience appreciated!

First take a look inside the case and see if you have an ATX, or AT power supply. The AT power supply provides power to the board when AC line power is supplied to the power supply. A switch within the case is used to make and break line power in order to turn your system on, or off. The ATX power supply is energized when two terminals are temporarily jumpered on the motherboard. A momentary switch is used to make this temporary connection.

Your problem could be mechanical/electrical involving one of the above-described switches. Or it could be a problem with the power supply, or motherboard. More information about your CPU would be helpful so others could help.

YOu may find that your powerup switch is bad or disconnecting.

This is a common failure mode on some Gateway and emachine boxes, FWIW.

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

If this is a E Machine you may need to check into your power supply. I have had to replace quite a few power supplies for the ATX machines with the AMD K6 II processors
that had the exact symptoms. I did notice that most of them were making a high pitched squeeling noise coming from the power supply. Hope this helps. :)
