Music On Hold Question! Help Please!

The store that I work at has an old NEC Electra Professional I unit. I am trying to get an external music source installed. I know how to program the unit to pass the external music on to the phones but am not sure how to get the audio to the unit. I've worked with these PBX units before but not this particular model. The input is inside the model and connects to a 4 position quick connector. Two wires is for the music on hold and the other two are for external paging. The external paging is working. I have an OHP 8000 player that has a single RCA jack output. It looks like the previous technician attempted to splice the rca cable to the phone cable attached to the board. It's not working though. Any ideas? Sorry if this is the wrong forum. Thanks!

Been 20 years since I worked on NEC systems.....hated every minute of it.

Not sure what you mean by "attempted", I would thing that actually "did" splice a cable and that is was going to a marketing device as well.

Is there a switch on the card to select Internal or External? or was that only on the big brother?

-Test a toner on the connection to the NEC (both the wire leads and with out by touch clips onto the two pins)
-Test for sound from the music source with test set

I know MOH ports sometimes blew on the Nortel Norstar systems.

MOH/background music connects to a jack MOH/BGM located on the main board. Connect a locally provided MOH source to the YL/OR pair on the MDF cable.
VR3 = Ext MOH volume.

NOTE look for the CT2 bank of 4 connectors, BGM, EXSP, DPH1, DPH2. I believe it goes to the BGM connector.
Then you need to program it for external MOH.
MB 1-52 set to 1 = yes for external MOH.
Programming: At station connected to port 1 or 2,
Press FNC + HOLD + # + 0 + *
Press line key 1
Dial 52,
Dial 1
Press TRF to write the data
Press SPKR to go back on line, or lift and replace the handset.

Sorry for posting this in the wrong forum. I have since posted it in the correct one. I have the phones programmed correctly. Just nothing coming out. I was told that it worked at one time but doesn't anymore. I checked the cables for continuity. I checked the source of the music from the OHP unit and it was playing through headphones. I'm just at a loss. There is no switch on the board itself. You have to switch it internally through the phones as belevedere stated.

belevedere, what is the VR3?

VR3 is a very small volume control on the main board. Do not forget that the program needs to be changed to tell it to use and external source.

Yes...I changed it to external source. I did not however know about the external MOH volume control. I didn't see a mention of it in the manual. I adjusted the volume control and still nothing. Ugh! I'm at a total loss. I really do appreciate you taking time to help though. Thanks!

As I recall, it used a pre-formed connector. Check it carefully and look for a broken or poorly crimped connector. If you have a spare, try that one.

Hey guys! Thanks for the replies. I found the issue...upon closer inspection the circuit had been burned out. I could see the black mark. No fix for that.
