We have tried various sources such as a boombox, an itouch but they all result in very low volume. With the input device (boombox etc) volume control at max, we get some hiss and static and it is still not really audible.
The wires check out OK.

What are they designed to use for a music input? What specs? What works best? Why is the volume so low.

You are using the headset port I hope.

Port is probably blown due to not correctly hooked up such as impedance mismatch, it needs to be about 600 ohms to answer your question.

KSU replacement is in order.

Check it from a landline and not a cell phone! This is a known issue sometimes the hold music sounds extremely low on certain carriers/towers. Happens especially w classical music. I almost replaced my ksu but realized this
