Hi. I'm pretty comfortable with many of the features of Access. At the moment I am having trouble with a database I developed for several folks to use. When one person goes in there is no problem, but anyone after that will get an error message: "Couldn't use xyz.mdb; file already in use". What setting(s) do I need to change to get this to work for several people at the same time (on different records, of course)?

It sounds like you have it set to open exclusively by default. You will need to change this to open in shared mode by default.

Also, I recommend you split the database into a shared back-end with each user having a local copy of the front-end. There are numerous threads about that if you do a quick search.

One last thing I would recommend would be to research and understand the different ways Access handles record-locking and choose the method that best suits you.

Good luck. Let us know if you get stuck along the way.

That user's access DEFAULT OPEN MODE is set to EXCLUSIVE in the ADVANCED tab in TOOLS.

This has to be set on that person's PC. I don't believe you can control this in the database.

Thank you both. I will have the users check. jdegeorge got the star, as his answer was more detailed about what I needed. Thanks again,
