Hi all

I have created a web site for a customer that is expanding.

Therefore, to be more concise to each service, we considered buying a new domain name and writing a new site dedicated to each particular service and having a link to the main web site.

I have looked over the Internet and could not find an answer either way for do's and don'ts.

The content would not be duplicate but each site would be on the same IP address.

We were hoping we could target better in seo by these dedicated sites.

Any thoughts either way?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

I was worried about the sites being considered spam sites.

They would also be on the same IP and all link back to one main site.

Any thoughts?

if you are trying to fool the SEs it won't matter about same IPs or not.

This idea that having seperate IPs for every one of your mirror sites, cloaked sites or link farm operation will somehow prevent it being getting banned is just another dumb idea bandied about.

What we wanted to do was target more specifically.

An idea was passed to us was that the home/index page was the most important
.
We were concerned that if we tailor our home page for one particular service, the other services would not rank as high.

Is this the case?

Not at all.
Search engines rank pages not sites, so every page on every site is a seperate entity where search engines are concerned,

Every page in a site has an equal chance of ranking for any query where the page matches the query. A big site with many subjects can potentially outrank "mini sites" on single subjects. Every page becomes a "home" page for any subject.

So I guess it must do something clever for the link pop and relevance links between the pages within one site?

If you want to segment the content and you have enough material (4+ pages) per category or subject area, make them subdomains. This will provide independent lift on the same domain and is easier to manage. Then you can have a 301 redirect from the new domains that you purchased to the subdomain.
