I have a machine that has a multiple installation problem that results in the boot process attempting to go into the upgrade/original install mode. This results in a corrupted kernal error. If I catch the boot in time, I can arrow up to the normal selection past the windows and 4.0 vga boot.
I have edited the boot.ini file to remove the extra instances of the OS selection process, but would like to get rid of this little error.
Do you have or did you have two drives in the machine.
Look in system BIOS and see which one it thinks it's using.
DougP
dposton@universal1.com

Hi Doug,

I'm using three IDE drives and two SCSI drives and one IDE cdrom.

Well that error stems from the Location of the boot drive.
i.e.
in the "boot.ini" file
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00"
you need to decipher the above line in your boot.ini to see which drive it wants to boot from.

Do you want to boot to a SCSI or IDE drive?
If you can boot the machine and go into "Administrative tools" , Disk Administrator" it will tell you the ORDER of the drives.
0,1,2,3 etc.
Then you can edit the boot.ini to reflect the drive you want to boot to.
DougP
dposton@universal1.com

I've already tried those options. Do you know what the boot file sequence is?
