Hello,

I hope you won't laugh reading this.

Is it normal to have several instances of system processes running at the same time ?

I think it is normal for rundll32 and svchost. But the other ???

Any link welcome, I'd like to die a little less ignorant.

Thanks

Thats not a dumb question. It all depends on what it is. However you shouldn't have a number of the same process running no matter what it is. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

This seems like an e-mail virus, but u should be able to find the file using search options, make sure ur search includes hidden file. U should be able to find about 2-3 files, like notifyphonebook.exe, notifyphonebook.exe-xxxxx.pf, etc.But u can't delete those file in normal startup, even u end the process in task manager, so reboot and start the windows in safe mode, search the file and delete them, restart again, u should be fine by then. I once had this situation, but everything is fine after I deleted those files.

Thanks,

What about the notifyphonebook.exe ?
I have posted questions on many forums about that process since it is running on my machine.
I performed searches on google, symantec security response, microsoft... but found nothing. I had located that process and deleted the source but is has come back. I think it was working when connecting the dsl, 'cause my computer was freezed for one or two seconds (no response at all even to ctrl+alt+del) when opening the connection. That symptom disapeared when I removed the source file.
Could you explain me what 'NotifyPhoneBook' is and what it does ? Its name does not sound as that of a nice thing :)
Does it send my outlook client address book to a mail virus or spam database ? And why is not identified by my antivirus or firewall (Norton products, just perfectly licensed and thus not 'tricked' by some genius hacker).

Thanks !

I have never heard of notifyphonebook.exe. If it is running on your computer it has to be loaded somewhere, try searching the registry for the filename. If you come up empty, try the system files...like autoexec etc.
Look in the startup folder as well.
If you look up the file on the hard disk, where is it located?

Is it NOTIFY.EXE?

The NOTIFY.EXE file is the program that alerts users of GroupWise 5 in Windows 95/98/NT ....Novell stuff.

You didn't mention what operating system you are using.

The more I learn,I realize how much more there is to know!

I had the same process running.
After uninstalling the adsl software, the process was not
started any more.

I found the executable for my w2k machine in the windows/system32 dir : notifyphonebook.exe

Try it and see if it works for you as well
