I'm looking to host 2 domains emails ( i.e. x.com and y.com )is it possible to have 2 differing IMS's on the same Exchange 5.5 machines?

Yes, it's possible. You can also have only ONE IMS for both domains. If you actually need two IMS'es i recommend you to solve this by using DNS to redirect each domain to a specific IMS.

No, you can not have 2 IMS's on one server. However, you can easily use one to receive for 2 domains. On the routing tab, simply add the second domain, route to inbound. The users for the second domain will have to have their smtp addresses modified on their mailboxes.
