VRRP Routing Question
I have 2 x layer3 switches running VRRP for VLAN 1 & 2
SW1 is master for VLAN 1 and SW2 is master for VLAN 2.

Primary default gateway 2Mbp/s is on sw1 vlan 1 while secondary gateway 1Mbp/s is on sw2 vlan 2.

SW1 ip default gateway is pointing to primary gateway address

Question:
On SW1 i wish to add a secondary gateway route with a lesser cost to utilise the available gateway on the second switch.
Do i create a static route indicating the secondary switch address as the next hop or do i indicate the address of the secondary gateway ?.

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

ManyThanks

As both switches have an interface in each vlan you should point the next-hop as the default gateway address for the static routes.

sw1
vlan 1 <def-gate 2mb address> cost 1
vlan 1 <def-gate 1mb address> cost 2

sw2
vlan 2 <def-gate 2mb address> cost 1
vlan 2 <def-gate 1mb address> cost 2

Many Thanks andy88

in the event of the next hope pointing to the second switch i the VRRP group can you see any difficulties apart from the extra hop count.

Many Thanks

Many Thanks

If sw2 fails then the next-hop for sw1 would be sw1's own interface (vrrp owner) so you would end up with routing issues and traffic going nowhere.
