Hi,

thread10-1292323 is the closest thing i can see to the problems i am having. The last post on that thread mentions about turning up the connection limits for inbound connections. Will this have a positive affect on the problem i am having?

At the moment, at random times, the MTA queue stops processing mail, i.e when i check there is sometimes up to 400 emails, some of which are over 2 hours old. If i restart the MTA service the queue immediately clears down and works for sometimes up to around a week, but other days (like today, i have had to restart the MTA service 3 times).

Can anyone help?

First standard thing to check: Are you running anti-virus on the exchange server? If you are - get rid of it. Second, are you getting any messages in the event log for the MTA?

I cant turn AV off as it is inappropriate to do so due to the nature of the information contained on the network.
There are no errors from the MTA in event logs.

The problem has become so bad now, the MTA stops shortly after the backlog has cleared (i.e I restart the MTA service, the emails clear through and then they start building straight back up again).

Can you give us an overview of the org? Number of servers, OS and SP levels, Exchange SP levels?

With the anti-virus, you must at least exclude all the exchange folders from being scanned.

Are you using Message Journaling? Have you installed any 3rd party exchange plug-ins?
