Hi guys,

I currently have a Windows 98se PC which upon logging in displays the error message 'A required .DLL file, MSVCRT.DLL, was not found'. Explorer then crashes and tells me to re-install Windows. Is there anyway round this?

Thanks,

Hammertime

Either run SFC to install file from your Win 98 CD disk or look for the file on, say, Google and download it and put it in your Windows/system file.

If you can't get the computer to operate SFC, then install a downloaded copy using DOS.

Hammertime:
I have Win98 not Win98 SE.....

Go into BIOS and set CD-ROM as "First Boot Device" (or Similar in your BIOS)...
Pop in the Win98 SE CD-ROM and Restart.....
With arrows, Choose "Boot from CD-ROM"......not Hard Disk.....
Then choose "2"(I think)..."Start Computer with CDROM support".......

From the A:\ prompt, type these commands and hit
"Enter" after each line......
(Notice the "spaces in between certain letters")
(D:\=<whatever your CD Drive letter is>)

cd D:\
cd Win98
extract /y /a base4.cab msvcrt.dll /L c:\windows\system

there's no more than "1" space in between, at a time, in the above command lines(never 2 spaces at a time)
Give it some time to go through the ".cab" files......
in Win98 the file is in Win98_55.cab......
don't worry, the (/a base4.cab) part of the command is just to tell it to start searching from the first .cab in order......

I just hope that SE has Base4.cab as the first ".cab" file....I'll check and post back

Post back if you have problems......
you may need to have startup disc....I don't, cause I have "Boot from CD" in BIOS and a Win98 OEM version CD

Hi Rob2806
I remember awhile back, we did that thing with you, with Explorer.exe being corrupted, and we did the renaming game....which worked...:>)
I believe you were able to access windows at that time and I guess we did it the long way......but what the hey.....right?
SFC is definitely the way to go when you can access windows....
It's a great method and will "overwrite" system files and allow a backup copy of original.....(which I wasn't to sure of then)...
However, when you can't access windows, the extract command works well....it's just tricky to get to and the syntax has to be perfect.....(Unless you boot with Start disc and use "Start with CD-Rom support" and get to A:\ with the Win98 CD in the drive....."And" then you switch to D:\ (or whatever CD drive letter is)....then and only then do you get a Nice, Simple, 4 step version of Extract....with a question and answer method after each step.......(you may even have to type in "Ext" instead of "Extract").....I forget....I just did it last week, but my brain is oozing right now.....so don't quote me.....

The method I just told hammertime was just simpler for me, cause I didn't feel like using Startup disc.....
Oh well......

Just thought I'd say hello.....at the same time as givin hammertime somethin to dance to...

It's good to see you get another star TT4U!!

my thinking was as Hammertime has access to the Internet, that he could download the file and back it up onto a floppy & then install it using DOS by copying from his A drive to his C Drive.
