Hi all

Our ISP has recently upgraded something on our firewall and we can no longer connect using Messenger, they say that all of the same ports are open as before and if i run the connection troubleshooter it says everything is ok but i am unable to logon.

I'm using the latest live messenger and am having trouble finding specific ports that should be open and servers that i should be able to connect to. As part of the upgrade there is now web filtering software installed so i'm wondering if a server is filtered.

Does messenger require access to a particular URL?

Thanks.

MSN Messenger uses a few ports but port 1863 is the one I believe needs to be open plus messenger.hotmail.com is the URL it needs access to. Because we have a third party IM service we've blocked AIM, Yahoo, and MSN at our firewall. You'd have to check with your provider to see if they are actually blocking those services. Good luck!

Cheers
Rob

If someone helps you, leave them a star. It is just a nice way to say "Thank you"

The answer is "PEBKAC!

Who organized the Upgrade? Are there Group Policy settings (from above and on high) that are controlling your access to Messenger?

832017 - Port Requirements for the Microsoft Windows Server System

We are a group of colleges that share a WAN that a company organises for us, they say that the firewall settings should be the same as before. We all manage our own active directory so i'm sure nothing has changed there so i'm now trying to work out exactly what ports and URL's are required.

I'll take a look at the links.

Thanks.

Can you please tell me the error (hex code) that you have been recieving? i'd like to see what is most likely the problem here at work for you.

Luis.

Some people make things happen, some people watch things happen, while others wonder what happened.

If i get it again i'll tell you, it magically started working today.

And off again :-(

Error code 81000306 is what i get, it's so odd it was working fine all day yesterday. I've installed the latest version on more than one box and it's the same.
