Hi, I've not had much luck booting an APC Card from an External CD Drive when attempting to install MSL 9.2 onto an APC.

I've got 3 CD Drives, all work intermittently with the APC and Drive but it's so flaky that there must be a better way, ie a USB Pen drive. Has anyone had any luck making a USB bootable drive with the MSL iso image. The MSL I&M Manual suggests making a USB Drive using

however it dosent seem to support iso images.

I've made a bootable USB Drive using UNetbootin which boots the APC from the USB partly installing the MSl but then after selecting the language and time zone it asks which drive holds the software, I can browse the USB Drive but I cant seem to find the correct folder where the software resides, it gives no hint of the filename, its a pity because it boots to the USB Drive every time, unlike the CD which is about every 20 attempts.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, I was hoping though to get away from the CD solution as all of my drives work on and off, if you go into the setup you can see the CD drive but like I say it sometimes boots and sometimes dosent, I've tried different disks. I work for a big UK telecoms supplier and several of us are all having similar issues with this process. I may contact Mitel and ask them to clarify what they mean in the I&M Manual.

Cheers

Have never tried this for an APC card but have created bootable USB drives for Linux distros. I would assume that the process would be the same. Make the USB drive bootable then copy over the MSL .iso. Don't see why there would be any difference in using a MSL .iso versus say Puppy Linux. They are both Linux. The problem would be infinding a USB drive the APC accepts. If there are cd/DVD drives that don't work with the APC card then I would assume there will be USB drives that also don't work.

If you need a program to create the bootable USB check out various Linux sites where they discuss creating Live distros on USB. I believe unbuntu even has a page.

LoopyLou,

Thanks for your reply, however,

I've already mentioned that I can use Unetbootin to create the bootable USB with the MSL on it, the issue is that see text below;

It boots the APC from the USB partly installing the MSL but then after selecting the language and time-zone it asks which drive holds the software, I can browse the USB Drive but I cant seem to find the correct folder where the software resides, it gives no hint of the filename, its a pity because it boots to the USB Drive every time, unlike the CD which is about every 20 attempts. It just dosent seem to be able to continue from that point.

I might try some other tool to make a bootable USB device.

We dont use our APC anymore but I can remember using an external 3.5inch HDD USB header( I took apart an external USB HDD case PATA)
and used a desktop CD drive.
Worked fine

Sorry steveycar didn't get the necessary info from you earlier posts. So obviously you are booting ok but once done it can't find the software file. No further suggestions will have to poke around a bit.
