I'm running Windows ME. Whenever I try to access my inbox in MS Outlook Express (MSOE), it crashes and gives the me the error message above. I've gone through the MSOE help wizard to no avail and I can't find any help in the MS Knowledge Base or anywhere else I've tried. Any suggestions? TIA.

Possible corrupted folders.dbx file. Find the location of your folders.dbx file and then rename the file to something like folders.old.

Relaunch OE and it should rebuild the file. Hopefully that will help. joegz

If the above fails .

Try choice 2 .

W95 you have 3 choices . With W98 , if you have IE5.1 or higher & you
still have IE4 installed the following applies . No IE4 only 2 choices .
IE5.5 if over the top of 5.1 , offers 3 choices .

You can install IE5.1 straight over 4 . A big feature with IE5 is that
it can be repaired without uninstalling . Here is how to do it . Open
Control Panel , Add / Remove , click on Microsoft Internet Explorer ,
then click on add / remove down the bottom . This opens a window with
3 choices .

Choice 1. Add , insert your IE5 install program & you can find other
items you may not have installed 1st time .

Choice 2. Repair , fixes problems that may crop up with IE5 / Outlook

Choice 3. If unfixable , removes IE5 & goes back to IE4 , now if you
want to you can reinstall IE5 or a later version or another browser
altogether .

No Microsoft Internet Explorer in Control Panel !
Start > Run , key in msinfo32 and press Enter . Click on Tools > IE Repair Tool or Start >
Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information . Click on Tools > IE Repair Tool .

Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt:
Click Start , and then click Run .
In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK :
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
NOTE : This command is case sensitive.

W2000 > Start > Run
then enter exactly (copy & paste)
rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance
this will give you the IE Repair dialog... proceed to repair IE

Repair IE6

I tried rebuilding the folders.dbx file, as you suggested, but it didn't help.

I also tried repairing and reinstalling IE6/Outlook, but neither of those strategies worked either.

I'm now contemplating using the "restore original windows configuration" option.

What do you think?

TIA

Here is another way , choose the fix for your version .

are you talking about the "restore original windows configuration" option through add/remove? this will just uninstall it and cause ALOT of problems in ME!!!!!(mine didn't boot back up into windows!!?!?!?)

if you don't have the latest version (IE 6.0 SP1) install that over it first and/or try the last post. i just don't want you doing what i did by choosing that option. don't ask me why it wouldn't boot back into windows!

Just a note to say that exactly the same problem has occurred with me in the last day. I am following these posts
closely as a result. Thanks for the help.

I have found the following to be an answer to your problem.

update fresh copies of following files:
psbase.dll, pstorec.dll, pstorerc.dll and pstores.exe.

You need you extract fresh copies from your IE5/6 installation files using System File Checker. hope it works

It's fixed! I followed the directions in the following link (from jmatt's post, above):
to regenerate a corrupt identities key in the registry.

It wasn't difficult, but I would certainly recommend backing up the registry and all the mail folders (messages, address book, accounts, etc.) before editing the registry.

Thank you for all your help.

The message reads like this, MSIMN has caused an error in the MSOE.DLL
If you continue to experience the problem try restarting your computer.

Any ideas ??

Thanks Kevin
