just formatted hard drive on gateway gp6 and reinstalled win98, on starting up getting new devices found all ok except nic (3com 3c905c) where starts to install driver but then shows dialog box for protocols. check tcp/ip and hit ok, dialog box dissapears and error report "msgsrv32 has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down...." appears.
tried replacing nic with netgear item but still the same.......

any ideas anyone??????

Are you using the drivers that came on a floppy with the nic?

yes, using drivers from floppy to no avail, also tried from 98disk, again same thing, fatal error...

I was wondering how long it would be before my favourite error raised it's head again. This is the Microsoft 32bit message server. have a look at the list below and see if you can find yours there.

Phil

I had the same problem recently with 5 identical systems and after trying lots of suggestions I simply reset the bios to default settings and had no further problems after that. Don't know why but it worked.

crustyoldbloke...

looked at all of the links, none of which seem applicable. the exact wording for the error....

"msgsrv32 caused a general protection fault in module NETDI.DLL at 00lb:00000dd4"

seems that everywhere i look no-one has had this peticular fault

The network class installer (Netdi.dll) is the class installer for all network components for Windows. During installation, Netdi.dll produces diagnostic information in the NetLog.txt log file in the operating system's root directory. Have a look at it and see if there is an obvious fault.

It could be that you may have a corrupted/damaged version of the file that is not being overwritten for whatever reason. Two things to try:

START>RUN>type in SFC>ENTER>START it may find the damaged file and replace it for you.

Copy the file from another PC onto a floppy and replace yours.

Good luck. Regards
Phil

done it!!!!!!

re-formatted hard drive, reinstalled windows, reinstalled nic. no all ok!!

not the simplest way to do it but thought that i'd already done it so why not check it was all ok and do it again...
