I am getting an error in the event log that says:

Virtual memory is fragmented in a way that normal operation may being to fail. You need to restart exchange services to correct this issue.
FIX: on the Microsoft website it says that service pack 1 fixes the problem. We currently have service pack 3 installed on the server.

I am running W2K server serivce pack 3 with exchange serive pack 3.

I have to keep rebooting the server because it is slow.

has anyone experianced this problem before?
thanks in advance

S.

I have the same problem. I have not found a solution yet. I am on SP3 as well. I have noticed that if I let the error go on too long, people start having calendar issues, especially those that have access to other users calendars.

this is the link that says that you need to install service pack 3. i have it installed but my files do not have the same version. maybe we are installing service pack 3 incorrectly.

i am going to try to reinstall it and see what happens. please let me know what you try also.

thanks

If I'm looking at this right, my version is later than what is in the article you included. Both of my files do not have the same date either. Let me know how it goes reinstalling SP3. I had this same problem when I was on SP2. I was really hoping SP3 would have taken care of the problem. Let me ask you this...do you have antivirus on your Exchange Server and if so, what are you using? We are using Symantec AntiVirus/Filtering for Exchange v3.x. I sometimes wonder if that is causing the problem.

i am using mcafee and i opened a case with them about this cause i thought it could possible be that but it is not the virus protection casuing it. I also have vertias back up exec and i will open a case with them and see what they say to rule them out also.

i will let you know when i reinstall service pack 3

So how much RAM do we have in these Exchange 2000 servers? I would not run Exchange 2000 on less than 1 GB of RAM. Also, make the paging file about 2 GB.

If there is sufficient RAM, Virtual Memory fragmentation should be a problem only on Cluster servers (which I would not recommend for most people).

I have 5 GB of ram and my page file is set for 2GB.

please post the actual event ID and description from the app log - maybe I'll find something.

Event ID: 9582
Source: MSExchangeIS
Category: Performance
Type: Warning
Description: The virtual memory necessary to run your Exchange server is fragmented in such a way that performance may be affected. It is highly recommended that you restart all Exchange services to correct this issue.

CAUSE
This issue can occur if the /3GB switch in the Boot.ini file is used incorrectly on a server that runs Exchange 2000 Server.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, take one of the following actions, depending on which type of server you are running:
If your server is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, remove the /3GB option from the Boot.ini file.
If your server is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server and has more than 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM, make sure that the Boot.ini file contains the /3GB switch.

i checked my boot.ini file and it does not have the /3GB switch. so my boot.ini seems correct.

thanks
s

I am not using Advanced Server so I should not and do not have the /3GB switch in my boot.ini.
