I just have no idea where to go - I cant get an answer from CA unless I come up with some big bucks and we can't really afford to do that. I've sent them an email but you know how that goes.. (answer in 4-8 weeks) Well here's my story and I'm sticking to it...

I am using MS SQL Server Service Manager Version 8.00.194 (microsoft SQL server desktop Engine) for my accounting application (they supplied it to us). (so its not the full blown version of SQL 20000). I purchased Arcserve 2000 (version 7, build 1086) and Arcserve 2000 Backup Agent for SQL (its the latest (I hope). - I can't really tell- which version it is. I applied the sp3 to arcserve and also the lo82876.exe off the CA site.(By the way - CA told me this would work with no problem-when I talked to them before buying!)Thanks CA.

The files that I need to back up look like this
kbills9.mdf
kbills9_log.ldf
kur99999.mdf
kur99999_log.mdf.

When I use ARCSERVE 2000 with the backup agent installed, I go to Backup--> Source-->
when I click on the Microsoft sql server icon I get this on the right side
kbills9
kuris99999
master
model
msdb

The master model and msdb files are in the original directory where I guess msSQL installed them
which is c:\program files\microsoft sql server\MSSQL$kuris\Data. We had to move the kbills file and the kuris99999 files out of here(c:) and put them on the d drive partition where we have the network connection. (s:\apps\database is mapped to D.)

SOME NOTES:

When I rt click on the kbills9 and kuris99999 files above -it gives me the backup agent option button and then if I click on it nothing happens. If do the same for the master and Msdb it opens the Backup Agent Backup Option s dialog box(and here it only allows for database - complete, no other option. I need to truncate transactionlogs!). I tried this and the back up fails.

Bottom line ___ the backup is not doing what it should be doing it wont even back up the master and msdb files.
IT tells me to check the dbasql log and the vdi log. In here is "FAILED TO RETRIEVE THE FILE LIST FROM SQL SERVER' and then in the VDI.log i get error on DBASQL70TID295VD0 -Error at TriggerAbort:inovked

I need it to backup these files and also to truncate the transaction logs. We need have this set up on an automatic daily system, which of course is the reason I bought this product.

I think after reading on Tek-tips I have to somehow tell Arcserve of the sql product -- where the files are?
When I click on the master I get security then I type in my administrative password and nothing happens.
I tried putting the sql files back into c:\program files\microsoft sql server\MSSQL$kuris\Data and attached them but that did not help.

I have reinstalled the msde engine twice and the agent 2-3 times and then reapplied the patch..

Any clues ??? Anyone ??

Thanks Tmandu

Tmandu start by reading by FAQ "CA SQLDB Agent Install & Troubleshooting Tips" This will give you some advanced tips on how to Trouble Shoot the problem. Then post your advanced trouble shooting results and we can go from there.

Thanks- I have read all of this . I am not a sql guru - we just want to back our two (2) , yes 2 dbs up . I have called the arc serve support line (and they basically said - buy the more expensive version and it can be done OR go back to your vendor and make them change some code/security when the MSDE SQL Server agents creates the security on the files . All this information for a mere $95.00

ARcserve also said that ' the sa role for the sql login ' has to be changed. I have no idea of how to do this.
So now I m talking to the vendor and that seems like a long shot -

FRUSTRATED as FRUSTRATED can be.
