In a previous post I ask how to remove the eFax System Tray Icon from the computer at work, the answer was to use Msconfig. That worked great on my Win98 machine here at my home office, however, the computer at work is Win95 and does not have Msconfig. Is Msconfig just for Win98, and if so, is there something else to use on Win95.

Manually edit the registry:

- Type regedit at the run prompt and hit OK
- browse to HKEY_Local_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
- delete the value for EFAX
- exit and reboot

As always, it's a good idea to backup user.dat and system.dat before you make any changes to the registry (just in case).

I tried that, but there is no entry there for eFax, yet the program exist in the system tray. Also, do you know, does Win95 have Msconfig and what would happen if I copied the msconfig.exe from my Win98 machine to the Win95 machine at work?

Msconfig from W98 has been reported to work on Win95 machines...Give it a try.

I think you might want to search for "hottray.exe" in registry.

Good Luck smitee

I see what is happening. MSCONFIG's startup tab is pretty much what you would see in the registry key I posted above (with the addition of the startup folder's contents).

The key in the registry won't be called EFAX. Instead as smitee suggested, look for the value for hottray.exe and delete it.

If you don't see that, post back with the contents under RUN in the registry...

Some programs that are launched at startup are not launched from the registry but from other locations.

1. The StartUp group in the Start Menu
2. Run or Load commands in the files Win.ini or System.ini
3. The autoexec.bat file

Check these locations and delete the appropriate entries or shortcut in the case of the StartUp group. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Well, the best solution as it turns out is to copy Msconfig to the Win95 machine. The file is "HotTray.exe", however it is NOT;

- In the Run section of the Registry
- In the Start Group
- In Win.ini
- In System.ini
- In Autoexec.bat
- Config.sys
- in any eFax .ini files

I ran a search on the registry for "HotTray" and only found two keys, both under the eFax software section, and neither key have any values associated with them.

I stoped systray and explore from loading up and my computer will not start how do i make them load again?

how do i, is this windows 98? Try restoring the registry to the day before you changed it. Here's how:

Start your computer and keep tapping the F8 key, and then using the arrow keys choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu and press enter. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command and then press ENTER. At the C: prompt type scanreg /restore and then press ENTER. There's a space between the g and /. Then select a registry copy dated the day before you stopped exlporer from loading at startup and then press ENTER. NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer and see if windows loads.

Note: choose a registry copy that's recent like from a day or two before the problem appeared. Don't choose an old copy if one happens to be listed there.
