MS Word: Stuck in "save as *.html" mode

Hi All,
Recently my MSWord (Office 2003 on WinXP) got stuck in "save as *.html" mode. If I want to use the "Save As" option Word always assumes I want to "save as *.html" and I have to manually change this to the "*.doc" option. Under Tools -> Options the "Save" tab is set to "*.doc" as the default file format, which incidentally I have never changed.
Thinking this might be related to recieving and saving "infected" word files from other users I have done some cleaning and upgraded MSOffice without any luck.

No, this applies to any .doc file I open. Word is somehow stuck in assuming I want to convert everything I work with. Most annoying.
