My g/f sent herself a word document to her hotmail address, got home wenbt into hotmail clicked open instead of save as then edited the file and clicked save. Then closed program, does anyone know how top retrieve this document as we cant find it anywhere!?

Should be in a Temp folder. Open up the document again from Hotmail. After opening click "save as" (but don't save it). The folder the one she saved should be in the same place with the same name.

As the folder it was saved in could be a Hidden folder, if you do a search for it, make sure your search includes system and hidden folders.

Other than that, yes, do another save and see what folder it is going to be saved in.

When clicking save as, it shows... c:/documents and settings/user/local settings/temporary internt files/then some random number e.g WEX4DF

when browsing to temporary internt files it just shows a list of files, no folders within that. we did find 2 word documents within the temporay internet folder but when clicked on it opened in IE and tried to load hotmail.

What is happening is that each time you Open the document a new temporary folder is being created within your Temporary Internet Files Folder. These temporary folders are hidden from certain parts of the UI but are always accessible if you know the names.

If, and it's quite a big if, the temporary folder still exists there are a couple of things you could try to identify it - (a) look at Word's list of recently used documents (under the File menu) - (b) check out the file structure through a command prompt window. Most likely, however, is that you are out of luck.

Enjoy,
Tony

What OS are you using Icelizard? On my XP machine it is in
c:/documents and settings/user/local settings/Temp

BTW: this can also occur when you open an attachment in an Outlook email. Outlook will make a copy of the attachment in a temp OLKWSY5G (gibberish) folder. ANY work and save on that file will be saved to THAT folder.

This happens even if you open and edit and save an attached file before sending it. The file attached to an email is NOT opened. Outlook makes a copy and works on that one.

Generally speaking, you should always save an attached file, and then open that one.

For our organization we actually disable the ability to open attachments from email. They must be saved to be able to open them.

As Tony mentions, it may be possible to find the file, but it is iffy.

Windows/IE/Outlook - all of them do not do a very good job of cleaning up after themselves. Look at Windows and all those .tmp files. All those ~whatever files. Those OLKxxxx folders may hang around, and they may not. Like the Temporary Internet Files that may have your file - it may be there, it may not be there.

On my own machine I periodically go and check and clean up. As Outlook makes real file copies (NOT pointers) some of these OLKxxxx folders can get filled with crap.

We had one user who had 6 Gb of files in her OLKxxxx folders. She always opened her attachments directly from the email message. After doing a study it was determined to change policy - no opening of email attachments. It is disabled by policy. Users hate it, and I admit it can be a pain in the butt, but...there ya go.

I believe later vesion of Outlook/Exchange have fixed this. I think.
