If I open a WORD or EXCEL doc and then go into I.E.,
an entry can be seen in the I.E. history list.
Is there a way to turn off history logging for tasks ran
outside of I.E.? I'm running XP PRo with SP1 and current
on all updates.
Thanks

Yes you can this is due to the Journal settings in Outlook.

1) Open Outlook
2) Click On Tools
3) Click on Options
4) Click On Journal Options
5) Untick all items you do not want to appear in history.
6) Click OK

Voila.

Actually that does not seem to stop the problem. The following will stop all documents from appearing in the My computer part of IE History. However it will also stop items appearing in Start > Documents

Open Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PoliciesExplorer

Create a new Dword value called NoRecentDocsHistory (Caps important)
Change it's value to 1
