Good day.

I have Microsoft Windows 2000 Server installed on my laptop which is part of a LAN which connects to the outside world via an ISDN modem. However, all the terminals inside this LAN can connect to the internet, mine can't.

I'm all ears for any process of elimination questions anyone may have. I just need this laptop to have access to the internet ASAP.

PS. This particular laptop has ORacle9i R2 Application Server installed on it. And being what it is it has to have access to the internet so that I can do messaging via sms and email - which is what the software does. PLEASE help me - anyone.

Thank you kindly

Have you check your DNS settings?

Also do you have your IP address and DNS settings Static.

I would suspect that your internet traffic is trying to route through your modem while your on the lan.

If you go into a command prompt and run the following commands

ipconfig /all
route print

Could you post the output?

Thank you for your reply. I am getting the guys to check the DNS settings. Thank you.

MSperrin, here's a print of what you wanted. Thank you for your interest.

C:\>ipconfig /all

The thing that strikes me the most is:

DNS:127.0.0.1 - which means its using itself as DNS. Is that server a dns one is is that the wrong setting?

If that is right what happens when you do a trace route?

in a command promt 'tracert microsoft.com'

some dns servers out there are
62.31.64.115
or
217.159.0.17
or
194.72.6.57

Sorry that last post was awful.

Your server is pointing to iteslf for dns resolution. If another server is providing DNS you will have to put that servers ip address in the TCP/IP properties page.

A good way to test this is to try browsing websites by using IP's.

try putting (microsoft's home page). If it works then your problem is either:

A. The problem server is not a DNS server and you will need to input the correct the DNS servers IP address.
B. The problem server is a DNS server but DNS is not running/setup correct on said server.

Hope this clears things up. Let us know how you get on :)

MSperrin...

I typed tracert microsoft.com at a command prompt. It returned: "Unable to resolve target system name microsoft.com". Is it trying to get on the internet when it does that? If so, it's not going to work because I can't get on the internet.

Oracle9i Application Server relies on the host machine to have a static IP. I can't go changing anything now. Well, I can but it would mean a gruelling 6-hour re-install of Oracle software.

Our gateway is 200.0.0.1. That's the hub that the ISDN modem is attached to (So I'm told - I just develop here - I'm not a network person at all). 200.0.0.2 is my terminal's static IP but for some reason I also have 169.254.80.3 as a static IP. I don't know what's going on. Can't I just let my shotgun give my laptop lead poisoning or something????????

MSperrin...

You're a legend. I changed to DNS. It works - and I'm not even trained that way. I should go and play the lotto tonight.

DG659, thank you for your help as well.

You all rock

Cheers

Billy
