I hope someone out there can please help! I have Publisher
2000. 2 people sent me Publisher files that I could not
open. When my Publisher launched, it then says, Publisher
cannot open files from another version. This has not
happened to me before. I asked one of them to Save As
Publisher 2000 doc and I still could not open it. Is there
anything I can do to open these files? It is very
important!!
The files being sent by the user appear to look like .tif files and indeed the sender advises that when she opens the files from her Explorer "imaging for windows" autolaunches. However when she opens this same file from Publisher all is ok.

Did you install the filter for TIF format? I don't have Pub 2000 so
can't tell you how to custom install if you don't have it installed now.

If you do have TIF filter installed for Pub, does your photo scanner
software give you option to save in compressed and uncompressed versions
of TIF format? If yes and you may have saved in compressed version, I
suggest you save it in an uncompressed version, as these are more
compatible.

You might want to try using some graphics viewing software to open the
file, than save it as a standared (at least more standard) uncompressed
TIF file. Or cut and paste it maybe. The freeware graphics viewer,
IrfanView32, can read several versions of compressed TIF files. It is
available from Tucows and other websites. You might be able to use that
to convert to uncompressed TIF that Publisher can read.

You may also want to have a look at this.

Thank you for your reply.
I have re-installed Publisher with all features but still cannot open the Publisher File.
I cannot understand how the user is sending Publisher Docs in Tif format - are these two programs linked ?

TIF is generally just an image format which publisher should open, can you ask the other user to save it as something else.

Microsoft Publisher files have the PUB extension.
TIF is indeed just another image format.

If you open it in an image editor, and it opens, it is NOT a Publisher File.

Are you sure she is talking about Microsoft Publisher?

I have seen elsewhere on the web in different forums where publisher can open tif files. Just as internet explorer and word will open jpeg's.
Its a strange problem though.

Publisher can IMPORT Tif's but not open them, if you try anyway, it will try and get text out of it, generating dozens of pages.

Having spoken to the sender indeed it is a Publisher file with a .pub extension.
The strange thing is that the file attachment looks like a .Tif file (i.e a tree) and this would explain why "imaging for windows" appears on her PC when she tries to open it.
Maybe she initiallt saved it as a Tif file ?
Anyway i still cannot open it in Publisher or otherwise although she can

It looks like for starters that someones file associations are messed up.
In windows Explorer(on both machines) go to tools, folder options, file types. Look for .pub and .tif files and ensure that publisher is assocciated with the pub files and image viewer is associated with the tif files.
What version of publisher is she using?
If I were you I would go to her PC, open the document using publisher and make sure you save is a publisher 2000 formated document.

if she saved it as a TIF file, then it is a TIF file and no longer a Pub-file.
The icons represented on her system don't really matter, it is the extension that matters.

As it sounds, the problem is on her side, so there is not much you can do about it. Ask her to make a dummy file in Publisher to see if you can open that one. If not, she has a problem somewhere...

PS: I assume the extension are visible on both your systems? Otherwise, that would explain what is happening.
