MS Project 4.0 - splitting tasks

In the Gantt chart, how do I split a single task to show a 'break', i.e. where the task is not a continuous block but has a pause in the duration ?
Any help would be very much appreciated

I'm not sure, but that feature may not have been available until Proj 98.
