Hi,

Hope someone will provide some suggestions. I have Win XP (SP2) and running MS Outlook 2003. When I open outlook, it opens two windows instead of one. I just close the other instance of it and it's ok, but would be nice to know what can cause this problem?

Thanks,
Alex

I have never heard of this before and am going to be no help at all, I'm sorry, but by a remarkable coincidence I got this yesterday on Outlook 2000 (on Win XP Home SP1). I was so surprised I took a screen print to prove it; I also looked in the Task Manager and there was only one instance of Outlook running despite the two windows.

The machine I got it on does have some problems (so I'm never entirely surprised by anything that happens) and one symptom is, and I've just realised the connection as I write, the front screen where you select a user to log on to shows how many unopened e-mails each user has - and it sometimes shows the same for me as it does for my teenage son. I have no idea where Windows gets this information - I use normal POP3 e-mail and Outlook, my son uses Hotmail.

I am going to reinstall Windows so can live with it temporarily myself - for a less drastic solution I would look at repairing your installations of Windows and/or Office because it ain't normal. I would, however, be very interested if anyone does have any explanation.

Enjoy,
Tony

could it be that you have a .pst file set to automatically open in a new window on open? it would still display the folder list down the left hand side and look like 2 instances of outlook have opened the same.

Check if the highlighted folders on the left are the same in both instances, if they aren't then this may be your problem. If they are, then.. could possible be a dodgy left mouse button, my old ms intellimouse is about to go in the bin as the left mouse button wiring is getting a bit dodgy and often registering a double click when i have only single clicked.

Just an idea though, i'm probably way off :D
