Hi

I have researched that the same copy of MS Office 2007 can be installed on a desktop machine & notebook without invalidating the license and hence the MS updates.

But I have heard mixed reports about the license and how it can be implemented. I have copies the relevant part of the EULA for your info;

====================================================

2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS. Before you use the software under a license, you must assign that license to one device. That device is the “licensed device.” A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device.
a. Licensed Device. You may install and use one copy of the software on the licensed device.
b. Portable Device. You may install another copy on a portable device for use by the single primary user of the licensed device.
c. Separation of Components. The components of the software are licensed as a single unit. You may not separate the components and install them on different devices.

==============================================

My problem is this

1. I have a new notebook with a clean OS ready for Office07 to be installed.
2. I have a desktop that requires a rebuild due to the current state of the operating system.
3. I want to install Office07 on both pieces of hardware in accordance with the EULA.
4. My interpretation is that the license dictates that I must install Office07 on the desktop top first BEFORE I install the program on the notebook.
5. However my priorities are that I do not want to rebuild my desktop at the moment.
6. I want to start using Office07 before I rebuild by desktop.

My question

Can I install the copy of Office07 on my notebook FIRST and then install the program on my desktop later after the necessary OS rebuild?

How can will this effect the MS updates often necessary to keep the program secure?

Thoughts?

Theoretically no. The EULA is specific about which must be installed first. However, I don't believe that you will have any problems with what you plan.

The important aspect is that only one copy is ever used at a time. So if you are away from your desktop using your laptop version, no one must be sharing your desktop version.

When you say that you want to 'rebuild' your desktop, do you mean wipe the drive and do a fresh install or do you mean that you will be changing components including the motherboard?

If it is the former, then why ot install Office 2007 on it now and register/activate, then install it on your laptop. Then you have met the licence criteria and when you reload your desktop, it sould still activate on line without the need to call MS.

My intension is to wipe the hard drive only with no change of components.

So you suggestion to install on dektop first is a fair call. I guess I didn't want to go through 3 installations unless it was absolutely necessary. I my older Office03 is working OK.

But a install on desktop first would be the path of least resistance.

Thanks for your thoughts.
