When i run cmd and im at a command prompt and try to run a ping i get 'ping' is not recognized as an internal or exernal command, operable program or batch file.

Does anyone have a clue as to what the problem is

Microsoft has nothing on their site:

they say it's behavior by design.

The PING command is available only if the TCP/IP protocol has been installed.

Eveything is installed; I get this error when i click start, run, cmd

When the command prompt opens i have to navigate to the c:\winnt\system32 dir in order to run and of the standard commands i wanted to know if there is anything i can do to allow the command prompt to exacute the common commands.

The "path" environmental variable on your machine is misconfigured. Make certain it points to %SystemRoot%\System32 and to %SystemRoot% and %SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem as its first three entries.
