We have recently purchased a financial modelling package that has an olap module. Among other things the sofware requires the use of sql server and analysis manager. The software is installed on:
Client Laptop - Win Nt 4.0
Application Server - Win 2000

and the database is housed on:
Sql Server - Win 2003

I have a problem when I try to run the olap module. I get an error message saying MS analysis server is not runnning. But when I look in the computer management/system folder of the application server MS Analysis services is running.

MS Analysis manager is installed on the application server and it has its own server registered as a repository. The repository uses the sql server as its data source. Analysis manager says that it is 'connected' to the repository at the bottom of the metadata tab. I cannot attach the sql server in analysis manager as a repository.

Enterprise manager (also installed and running on the application server) can see the sql server and all the tables.

I previously had a MSDTC error in the event log when logging into the application which was fixed by enabling the network com+ and network dtc access functions in win 2003 on the sql server (dont know if this is relevent).

Has anyone got any ideas what the problem could be?

So is your problem connecting from the client laptop to the application server?
The obvious thing is to make sure that a good version of PTS is installed on your laptop. You should be able to find one on the SQL CD (under something like msolap\x86\pts) or aternatively download from the MS web-site. Best to install PTSFull.exe

If the problem is from the application server it is all within one box, then that sounds a little odd as PTS will be installed.

Thanks for your response AMJackson....

The issue is on the application server (I think), because it also happens when on log on as a client on the application server and try to access Olap functionality.

How do I know if PTS is installed? Should PTS be in the services running?

Sql SP3a is installed on the app server. When I to run PTS.exe (I found it under the \sql2ksp3\msolap\ directory) it say that the Analysis parent is already installed. So, I assume PTS is already installed.

further update...

I have managed to connect analysis manager to the sql server and add database connections.

I also get an error when I calculate and generate cubes in the application (from the application server) saying that it failed because it cant connect to the repository, not associated with trusted connection...

PTS is the client component that many OLAP Clients use to connect to the Analysis Services server. You will find it installed as MSOLAP80.DLL and MSOLAP.DLL located in
\Program Files\Common Files\System\Ole DB

I'm still unclear as to where the olap module is running. Is this on the machine that has Analysis Services installed or another machine.

This leads me to believe your problem is more of a permission or security role issue. In your OLAP DB you have a role allowing access to the cube(s) that has the user you are trying to connect as from the application server?

msolap80.dll and msolap.dll are in the \Program Files\Common Files\System\Ole DB directory.

Please excuse my lack of understanding, I am not IT trained, but an accountant.... What do you mean by "Is this on the machine that has Analysis Services installed or another machine."

I am runnning MSSQLServerOLAPService on the application server (Analysis Manager and Enterprise Manager are also running/installed on the application server). Enterprise manager can see the database (all tables, etc) on the sql server. Analysis manager, however, can only see the sql server (and detail repository metadata - its says 'connected' at the bottom of metadata) and connot see the tables or anything else under the sql server.

My username is an administrator and olap administrator on the application server and the sql server. I am also a system administrator and db owner in the security settings for enterprise manager.

In enterprise manager I have added my username and a 2 application generated user names to the system admin and bulk insert roles. (note: I am the only user in a test environment at this point in time)

I am ignoring my client laptop at the moment and am trying to get it running by logging directly (terminal services client) on through the application server.
