Why cant i open my access database file when someone else already has it open? It should say "file open by XXX open as read only"

Please help as this is most annoying

An access database is not a word document !

If the other user elects to open the .mdb file "exclusivly" then exclusive is what they get.

If the other user doesn't open it "exclusivly" then you'll get entry just fine.

didnt realise that you get faced with the option of opening the dbase exclusivly.

many thanks

Hi

As well as the exclusive option, you can also get this message if all users do not have the correct (network) permissionms in the folder where the mdb is located, all users who will access the mdb need read/write/create/delete permissions

will all users who access the mdb need these rights if they only want to read only? - sorry if sounds a daft question its just that ive never touched Access before.

Thanks

Hi

Yes, because openning an mdb via Access causes a .ldp file to be created in the same folder as the mdb, hence user must have create priveledges, when last user disconnects from the mdb, the ldb is deleted, and since you cannot predict which user will be last to disconnect, then users need delete permissions too.
