I am running 8.12. My /var/spool/mqueue directory doesn't seem to be cleaning up after itself. Mail seems to be working fine, but the mqueue dir has messages in it from several weeks ago. I know I can move the queue and run it as a seperate process, but I thought it was supposed to regularly purge messages older than Timeout.queuereturn=4d. Am I missing something??

Thanks in advance.

As a follow up to my own question, the queue has grown to about 55,000 files or (I guess) 25,000 messages. Could it be that the queue runner can't keep up with the messages to process the messages older than 4 days? in other words, could my queue runner be working fine, but working for days within those 55,000 files? if so, could anything speed this up?

thanks.

Add it to the sendmail.mc file just to be sure it
is reading it properly.

define(`confTO_QUEUEWARN', `30m')dnl
define(`confTO_QUEUERETURN', `4h')dnl

As you can see I don't want the mail on my server
for more than 4 hours and the user will get warned
after 30 mins. This cuts down on the bandwidth usage.
I see more and more just bouncing the mail right back
after 5 ins or so.

Also are you using sendmail -bp to check the
queue? When someone is on vacation and the autoresponder
is going I get a few that linger from the spammers. The
reason I send it back so quickly.
