Hi!
As I don't see a Vista Forum I put my Q here.
I copied on a win7 machine MP4 and JPG files on external drive.
When trying to copy those to Vista machine the MP4 files where not visble on the external drive.

Also, when trying to copy files (chat from messenger) from that Vista Machine to the external drive that was prohibited.
Is normal behaviour?

Hidden or system flags set on the mp4 files?

When you say 'prohibited' - what do you mean? Vista's lovely UAC may keep asking if you want to do this - what actually happens (also - you're not copying to a 'read only folder' or one with odd explicit permissions set?)

Also make sure you haven't accidentally let a firewall application block access to the USB drive. It's possible for that to occur. For instance, many of the "defense" type applications built into many firewalls will even block the system files from changing settings without your prior approval. So, if you've got a 3rd party firewall installed, I'd suggest checking the settings there as well... maybe even test by temporarily turning the firewall off completely, and then turning back on after testing of course. [wink]

Sorry for late reply but I don't have the Vista machine in my neighbourhood. Someday this week I will go to that machine again and can check your suggestions.
Anyway thanks so far.

Are the .mp4 files visible but only showing a default (blank) icon perhaps due to not having a correct file association for the opening program set for them?

Have you tried recopying the .mp4 files onto the external drive to see if you are told that they already exist?

Have you tried running ChkDsk /r on the external drive?
