I recently installed 2 new drives on my server and set them up as a RAID one array. The 2 original drives, also Raid-1, are getting full from the redirected MyDocs folder. I want to move this redirected folder to the new drives. Any help on how to do this without losing data, access or functionality for the users would be helpful.

Thanks

Just copy the folder over to the new drive and share it. The UNC path will always be \\server\share regardless of whether that share physically exists on drive C or D or whatever.

Err, move, not copy.

OK, I'll try it, thank you. By the way - I am sure that this is best done when the files are not in use, i.e. everyone is gone home for the day.

If possible, it's best done when there is minimal use. You may also want to look into using robocopy to do this as it gives you more options and retains attributes and security on the files.

Great tip, I'll check it out. Thanks so much for your assistance.

Lawnboy - I think you had it right first time :)

Copying the data allows you to fall back to the original location should any issues occur. You can remove the data from the old location at your leisure if you are satisfied that you have no issues with the new location. Also, if something happened mid copy, you have the data there in the old location should you need to verify any of the files/folders.

I also recommend Robocopy

Copying doesnt retain NTFS permissions though. I think that is why the suggestion was to Move instead of Copy. Just for less administrative work.
