ok, this may sound really dumb but how to I change the position of the flags in the Outlook preview pane so that they show up as a left hand column (at the beginning) rather than the right (at the end)? I went to CUSTOMIZE CURRENT VIEW | FIELDS and moved it up in the list of "show fields in this order" but that seems to make no difference.

for some reason, the flag doesn't want to move unless you remove it first (right click, select show fields... then remove flag status. Select ok to make sure the flag symbol dissapears. Go back to the same dialog and add flag status then move up and it should go.

Thanks, Paul. Much appreciated. A friend of mine had shown me this as well. It does work. The only problem then is that, at least with Outlook 2003, some of the functionality seems to have been lost. The clear flags don't appear by default and, to change flag status, you need to right-click on the message and select "Follow-up". Kinda lame. Know any way to get the clear flag to show up again by default?

Sorry, I don't think you can get the advanced functionality from the flag status column. After further research I have learned that the flag at the end is not your typical flag status but what is called a quick flag

right click, arrange by -> custom, other settings... there is a check box for show quick flag column. This is what the flag at the end actually is, and it appears to have added functionality. I was not able to find a way to move the quick flag. The flag status is merely a heading for display and sort features, no different than showing sent by, subject, etc.

However, a possible solution is to create a toolbar with the flags and clear flags settings, then you can select one or multiple emails and click the button on your toolbar to change the status.
