I have to move 2 servers from one domain to another - 1 server is running SQL 6.5 and the other SQL Server 7.0

Will I have to rebuild the SQL environment then restore the data or is there a way of moving the servers into another domain without having to go through that painful process ?

Hi Ian,

Actually moving a host server from one domain to another is quite simple and does not affect the SQL server and databases. What may be affected are the remote connections. In order to answer that aspect of the question requires more information.

Are you running on standalone servers? Are you using NT authentication and if so, are the access groups local to the server, the local domain or are they part of a master domain? Will the host server name remain the same?

The actual move of the host server (assuming it is a stand alone) from one domain to another is just a function of re-registering the host server with another PDC, i.e. creating an account for the host server and connecting in order to register the GUID of your machine with the PDC. To this you will need to be a domain administrator or have the domain admin create an account for your server in the target domain.

I hope this helps
