This situation may be more related to PalmDeskTop, but I somehow doubt it.

A friend has WindowsXP and 4 (father, mother, 2 sons) users on 1 computer. Each user has their own login, but all operate in SysAdmin mode so they can all d/l programs as desired.

Enter PalmDeskTop. Father and #1son aquire Palm Pilots for Christmas. #1son d/l PDT from PalmOne and installs. Father goes to use PDT under his login and it's not there.

Of course not, it's available to #1son 'cause he installed it.

Ok. Move the shortcuts from #1son DocumentsAndSettings | StartMenu to All Users. NOT.

Uninstall and reinstall under my watchfull eye looking for the dialog box that asks if all users should be able to access this program, BUT alas no request. Back to square one.

I have Win2k on my beast and have no trouble moving shortcuts around, and I operate as SysAdmin.

Any ideas? Did I leave out pertinent info?

j0ckser,

I don't know much about the PalmDeskTop personally, but couldn't you just copy the icon and copy it from one user profile to another user profile, rather that the All Users profile?

Again, I haven't used PalmDeskTop, so the target may be specific to one user, in which case you'd probably want to install it more than once for multiple users.

I didn't try to copy from one user to another per se; rather, after the first attempt to move it from one user to all users failed to provide a useful shortcut (shortcut was there, just wouldn't co-operate), I copied it from one user to all users and got the same result. I submit that copying or moving to another user would have the same affect.

I mentioned PDT as there may be a program specific chellenge here, in which case i will move the quest to another forum.

PDT does have the capability of differentiating between users such that for a single install, several users can synch their palms to PDT and have their 'stuff' kept separate. There isn't much in the way of security (not that I can see so far), but the ability to use one app for several users is important.

Again, I haven't used PalmDeskTop, so the target may be specific to one user, in which case you'd probably want to install it more than once for multiple users.

This brings up an interesting point: would XP allow for multiple installations. Indeed, is that the way to go? As this is a friend's computer and they have just suffered through a hard drive reformat and o/s install, I don't want to screw up the computer or the frindship by suggesting a second install that might create internal computer conflict.

j0ckser,

I can see where you don't want to be in a position where it might harm the functionality of the computer.

I'd expect that this question has come up in some Palm-related forum (either here or on the Palm website), and I'd check that out just to be sure.

Multiple user support:

Windows XP allows multiple users to share a computer, each using separate settings. Several individuals can use XP Home Edition with Palm Desktop software when each user logs on individually and logs off when done. Install the Palm Desktop software to a different location for each user (e.g. C:\Program Files\palmOne\JeffHawkins, C:\Program Files\palmOne\DonnaDubinsky, etc.). This is especially useful when users synchronize to different desktop applications. For example, one user can synchronize to Palm Desktop, while another user can choose to synchronize to Microsoft Outlook.

star to you linney. i looked at palmone, but not the right place, i guess. many thanks.

followup

my friend did a second install, and lo and behold all it really did was to allow icons to work for his login; it didn't really create a new installation.

thanks all.

It has been my experience when moving a Remote Desktop icon from 1 user to the all users folder it makes an unusable icon for the other users. However if you copy that same icon and paste it to each user's folder seporatly then they work fine. It may be the same for Palm Desktop.
