hi
i have fc4 installed on an old PC Hard Drive
i'm trying to move this hard drive to a new computer (diffrent hardware).
which steps should i take ?

As long as you are using a stock kernel from your distribution, you can:

1. Takout your HDD from your old system and put it into your new one.
2. Clone your old HDD to your new HDD.

Either one should work well.

If you didn't build a custom kernel for your old PC then its safe to assume you are already using a stock FC4 kernel.

Hi Blacklow

Usually the old kernel will work on your new hardware as well. Most configurations are module based nowadays, so it should sort out most of the hardware you use by itself.

A pitfall could be when you change the place of the harddisk in the system. (e.g. it's a 2nd drive now like /dev/hdb and in the new system it's connected as /dev/hda, the primary IDE interface)

Alternatively, if you don't run custom applications/daemons and have a straight forward server functionality. you can try a newer Fedora, copy the data and test it.

Good luck,

If you don't have a spesial reason for sticking with FC4,
I would suggest uppgrading to FC7.

Solution1: Backup your data from FC4, install FC7 on your new hardware, and copy in the backup-data.

Solution2: Install FC7 on the new hardware and use rsync to copy the data from the old computer to the new.

Result: Enjoy all the new stuff in FC7, with Your old data. :)

geirendre;
Doesn't FC see older FC installations when it tries to install? I would agree with backing up the data, but I suspect that the Fedora installer will attempt to "update".

Disclaimer: Have never tried to update, but if you have your data backed up, this might be a very pleasant experience.

Yes, I would suspect so. It most certantly should.

Somehow I forgot the "move this hard drive" in his post,
thinking he ment all new hardware. Silly me...

But we all have a recent backup just in case do'nt we? ;-)

well... is it possible to RSYNC the entire system to FC7?
the main issue here is the ASTERISK data and its
configuration ( i'm using 1.2.7.1 Version).

BTW - i did try to move the HD to my new INTEL965 board
but it didn't work .
