Hello HP Gurus,
I've bought "backup" HP9000 server and have to move HP 10.20 system to it. I install HP UX from install CD, create the same partitions as in an original server and use fbackup/frecover machanism to move the file system. After that new copy of HP-UX have crashed. During frecover running there was a couple messages about no disk space. Next I found out, that partition geometry has changed -all of them had 200M ;-). I suppose that some file responsible for LVM mechanism was recovered and crashed the filesystem. How to do it safety - restore all filesystem except information about new ( a little bit different ) hardware.
Many thanks for help,
Greg
P.S. sorry for my "globish";-)

I'd be tempted to restore files under / selectively - e.g.
just pick things like /etc/passwd, /etc/group, etc.
rather than just restoring the whole lot.

Hello,
Thanks for advice, I have had such idea but I haven't enough information. I will glad if somebody could tell me the list of files (directories) wihich are responsible for devices and volumes not to destroy new system.
Regards,
Greg

Blimy, there's quite a few ... I'll have to look them up as top of my head I might mis a few.

Might take me a few days, check back here later.

OK,

Install HP-UX onto your new system from CD of ignite image.

From a backup, recover entire vg00 apart from :

/etc/ioconfig
/stand/ioconfig
/dev
/etc/lvmtab
/etc/fstab
/etc/lvmconf

Recreate the "data" volume groups (non root), then
recover the data from backup.
Depending on how different the hardware is, this may/may not work. It would work if your're recovering a system from tape, back onto the original system.

Perhaps the way to approach this is to install HP, then recover only the application files, leaving the OS alone.

Martin
Recover data from backup.

Please note I haven't tested the above, but believe it should work.

Hello,
Thank you Martin,
Before your answer I restore vg00 except:
/etc/sbtab
/etc/lvmconf
/etc/disktab
/etc/fstab
/etc/lvmtab
/etc/mnttab
/dev
/stand
System looks like to work ok, any errors are reported on start but application (openview and some additional) doesn't work properly. I'm not sure, does openview, oracle etc. need to reregistrate for moving to another machine?
Maybe I should delete all and start all process again exactly as Martin said
Regards,
Greg

Not sure on openview, but oracle cannot just change machine name - it has to be reinstalled - not a particularly big job.

The best way, if possible is to completely install everything rom scratch, then just recover the actual dara (oracl in this case I guess).
