I tried moving the "Desktop" folder from its default location to another place (where I'd like it) - but then the files no longer appeared on the users Desktop. How do I move the folder and have XP point to my new location?

Thanks,
Dot

Yes, they can logon. But when they do, the Desktop has zero icons on it. Just the Start button.

Can they right-click on the Desktop and select "Arrange Icons By"/ "Show Desktop Icons"?

Or as above then Properties/ Desktop/ Customize Desktop?

If not then their profile may be corrupted, which leaves with the earlier suggestions to copy a profile.

I would use the Windows built in tool if you can log into the users profile. It's under system tools. File and settings transfer it works pretty well and is easy. You can do a custom transfer and select just the desktop if you want. The tool is only on 2000 and XP I believe though. I have only used it in XP.

This particular user who's lost their Desktop has very limited rights. I doubt they can run anything like a System tool. What can I run for them from my (admin) account to reassign their Desktop to its proper folder?

A Limited User may run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard under their own account.

The Desktop is a Folder and would have to be added to the list of saved settings (if you went for settings only and not files).

I don't know whether this would be helpful in your current situation, but it only takes a few seconds to run if you want to try it?

[blush] Linney, I think you asked the $64,000 question:
Can they right-click on the Desktop and select "Arrange Icons By"/ "Show Desktop Icons"?
...it turns out that's all it took. My little kids unclicked that "Show Desktop Icons" !!!

My sincere apologies to everyone who was kind enough to rack their respective brain on how to hit my OS upside-the-head to behave, when really it was as simple as that...

Thanks, again, Linney! (star)
